Characters & Applications

So Why Afterlife? Why not? Because, with the rare exception—we're looking at you, Jack Harkness—everyone dies. So rather than pick a setting, have you pick a canon point... we decided to go from the point of death.

But what if my character isn't dead in canon? No problem! Remember, as all characters die at some point in their life, it's up to you to decide when and how.

So does my character know they're dead? Totally up to each player! And, frankly, it's a lot more fun when not everyone knows they're in the afterlife.

Well this sounds great, but I play an immortal. My character cannot die so does that mean I can't play here? Absolutely not! The PTB have given special dispensation for characters of an immortal, godly, angelic, or similar natures. Think of heading to the Afterlife as a sort of vacation...

What about characters with powers? When all characters approach the gateway, they will be given a goblet. Upon drinking, the sparkling liquid will dampen any and all special abilities. For instance, if your character can fly, they can only reach the rooftops and no higher. Telepaths may be able to read minds, but will notice a definite exhaustion tax for doing so. The PTB believe in equality in the afterlife... and for those immortals, they did promise a vacation after all. And drinking from the goblet is non-negotiable. Don't try to convince the PTB otherwise.

What does my character look like? The Powers That Be (PTB) have graciously allowed each soul to choose how they appear in the afterlife. The only caveat is all souls must appear at least eighteen years of age as sex is not only allowed but encouraged. Souls are permitted to change their appearance after the accumulation of enough points. For further description of the points system, please consult the rules.

Why the Live Action/Real Life icon rule? It's not to be anti-anime/comics/game characters. In fact, we welcome them with open arms! Mostly it's due to the game mechanics and the ability to change appearances through point exchange. Thus it makes it easier for you to change appearances via icons. If you have a real issue with it, contact the mods!

How many versions of a character are allowed in game? Up to two, depending on the medium. Thus—there could be two Tony Starks, one from the MCU and one from the comics. However, this doesn't mean you could have two Tony Starks hailing from comics just because one version is from Earth-616 and the other is Earth-9999999. For these purposes, TV and Film will be considered one medium as will comic books, graphic novels, and fiction novels. In other words, you couldn't have Jack Harkness from the comics (yes, there were comics) and the novels. Pick one or the other!

OMG, [insert new movie/tv show here/book/comic] just came out! How long do I have to wait to play a character from it? As not everyone can watch things the night it airs or go to the movies the day it comes out or read things in under 24-hours, we want to give everyone a chance. You all know what Wil Wheaton says*. For all new fandoms/characters, we ask you wait at least two weeks or until the next application cycle to apply for that character—whichever is longer.

Can I play an OC? Of course! While we would like to emphasize fandom characters in this game, OCs are a vital part of dwrp. That said, we will not accept any Mary Sues or Gary Stus.

I like playing obscure characters! And we love you for it! However, as the mods cannot be well-versed in EVERY fandom (as much as we may like to be) so we ask that any character you apply for has a wiki page of some ilk on their specific fandom wikia site. If they don't have enough background to at least have a wiki page, then maybe you might want to look at an OC!

I play a character from anime/manga/comics. What should I do for icons? We'd prefer all icons to be live action in nature. Not everyone is going to be a genius at photoshop and we don't expect you to make your icons be exact! That said, if you have your heart set on drawn icons for these mediums, all we ask is you have a minimum of 5 live action icons.

Game Play

You mentioned sex. Is this a sex game? ...sorta? It's a game where sex is encouraged amongst the characters. However, sex is not a requirement for activity and is not a requirement for entering the afterlife. But, hey. Your character is dead—may as well take advantage of all the afterlife has to offer.

Why the network activity requirement? Especially since I play a character who wouldn't post there monthly... And we totally get that. However, the PTB are quite evil when they want to be, and they are going to push your characters outside their comfort zones. Not only that, but your character can filter entries to people as well. Think of it like sending a mass text to friends. If you're struggling, PM the mods. They'll be happy to help you brainstorm ways of coming up with that aspect of activity.

So... where is my character allowed to go? What does this place look like? The layout can be found in the premise. Your character can go anywhere but even in the afterlife... actions have consequences.

So what does that mean for spoilers? Spoilers will, naturally, happen in game. If an episode aired that night, put it behind a cut. Otherwise, use common judgement and follow Wil Wheaton's #1 Rule of the internet*.

Is canon puncturing allowed? That's up to the individual player, but as a whole canon puncturing is not only allowed but encouraged.

Anything Else?
